COGIC UK mourns the passing of Rev. Carmel Jones

It is with profound sadness that COGIC UK announces the death on Saturday 22nd July of one of our ministers, the late Revd Carmel Jones. The history of his rejection by the Anglican Church is well documented but their loss was COGIC’s gain. Revd Jones joined the Church of God in Christ in his late teens and remained until his passing serving the church in a number of capacities. He was a deacon, an elder, a pastor, a member of the Trustee Board, former member of the Executive Board and Assistant General Secretary. He was a man with a vision and integrity, He loved and was loved and respected by peers and others, and an inspiration to others.

He was always ready to give sound advice and help in whatever capacity he could. He will be greatly missed.
With a vision for the spiritual and economic growth of the Black community, he founded the Pentecostal Credit Union (PCU) where he worked tirelessly to assist the community and churches with loans to purchase homes and churches at a time when it was difficult to access funding from the banks. The PCU grew from strength to strength and has become one the largest credit unions in the UK. He has left a remarkable legacy.

We offer our condolences to his wife and the entire Jones family and our prayers are continually with them. May God grant them peace and comfort, during this very difficult time of bereavement. heartfelt sympathy for the loss of Rev. Carmel Jones. May his legacy and impact on the community bring comfort.

He was a trailblazer/legend/pioneer/our black banker/mentor and friend.

When I look at all the acquisitions of Ruach City Church, it started with Red Carmel Jones who gave us our first mortgage when our High Street Bank turned us down. I tell this story all the time, I know but I remember when Red Jones started the @pentecostalcreditunion a lot of our very own Black Leaders here in the UK, were sceptical of his vision but he proved all of them wrong and he built one of the largest black credit unions in this country.

Thank you Revd Jones for showing us that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. You have gone to be with the Lord but you will never be forgotten for all the great work you have done!

On behalf of Bishop Alvin Blake, The Executive Board and members of Calvary Church of God in Christ (COGIC) UK, we offer our sincere condolences to Evangelist Jones, and all members of the Jones’ family, friends and loved ones.

The Church of God in Christ count it a privilege to have known and worked with Rev Jones. Who could have predicted that the young man who joined the Church in one of its branches at Sussex Road in Brixton would have risen to such heights and be honoured for his work not only in the church but in the community? Today, it is fitting that this service should be held in a church in Brixton.

We have indeed lost another general, a true soldier of the Gospel, a generous and valuable member of the church. Revd Jones was a man of vision, integrity and wisdom. He was a brother, friend and fellow minister who was quite vocal in his opinions, tempered with a warm spirit and an infectious laugh. There was always a welcoming smile.

He worked tirelessly to fulfil his calling and supported the church faithfully. As a member of COGIC he went through the ranks from an Elder to pastoring one of the Branches in Archway. During this time, he became a member of the Executive Board. He held these positions until ill-health caused him to relinquish his roles. He remained in Archway under the leadership of a new Pastor and when the journey became too difficult, he returned to the Church at Fentiman Road, in Vauxhall where the former members of Sussex Road now owned their own building. We thank God for his faithfulness and hard work over the years.

He remained a loyal member of COGIC although his work and ministry took him across many denominations and influential groups. He worked as a chaplain within the Prison Service and under his influence, some of us were privileged to join Prison Fellowship to correspond with inmates, attend Holloway, Pentonville and Dover prisons to minister in a variety of ways; for example, through discussion Bible groups, singing and sharing the word of God in the chapel services. Undoubtedly, his work as founder of the PCU supporting churches to buy their own properties will be highlighted and COGIC UK was also a beneficiary of this. COGIC UK is proud that he was one of our own ministers; our brother and friend and with honour, we can truly say, Reverend Jones, we salute you.

He will be Greatly missed by his family, friends and the wider church community. Nevertheless, we recognise that in dying, he has gained eternal rest with the Lord, as the apostle Paul said in Philippians 1: 21 ‘For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain’.

Rest in peace until we meet again at Jesus’ feet.
